Artist Statement

I find beauty in the ordinary details of my daily life, and my day is filled with horses; the reflection of the surrounding world in the blinkers of a driving horse, light on a leather harness, the echo of sun on a chestnut bay, the lines of a tousled mane. These pictures fill my mind and ask to be painted, sketched and cut.

My paintings depict what I love, what excites me to want to put it on paper or canvas. Nothing deep, nothing mystical. I love horses, and more than not, they are my subject of choice. The challenge of depicting the power of the horse, its movement and fluid lines juxtaposed with the angular rigid lines of a carriage always inspire me. Whether a transparent watercolor with delicate, luminous wash and fine line, or casein on canvas with thick impasto brush strokes in vivid colors, I tell the tale of the horse.

My papercuts capture the drama of the equine in stark black and white, ying and yang, creating a three dimensional effect from a two-dimensional art form. My background in design assists me in depicting excitement and movement with shadows and light.

Both my paintings and my papercut drawings are created in order to put into an art form a feeling or recollection of an experience past, and engraved in the viewer's mind. Each work tells a story, invokes a memory.
